AUSTRALIAN surf ironman great Ky Hurst has qualified for a second successive Olympic Games after finishing fifth in the 10km open water event at the world championships in Shanghai.

Hurst, 30, finished strongly in Wednesday’s race at Shanghai’s Jinshan City Beach to secure a top 10 finish needed to qualify for selection at next year’s London Games.

The Queenslander finished the course in one hour, 54 minutes and  33.9 seconds while Greece’s Spyros Gianniotis won the race in  1h54m24.7s.

Hurst, a two-time national 10km champion, finished 11th in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He joins fellow Australian Melissa Gorman in earning Olympic selection after she finished fourth in Tuesday’s women’s 10km race.
