KURRAWA lifesavers Ky Hurst and Melissa Gorman have continued their sizzling form at the world swimming championships in China, winning silver with West Australian Rhys Mainstone in the open-water teams event.

Hurst and Gorman sealed spots at next year’s London Olympics earlier this week with top-10 placings in the 10km open-water event at Jin Shan Beach, near Shanghai.

The pair joined with Mainstone this morning in the inaugural 5km relay event, with the trio finishing just a second behind the gold-medal-winning US side.

Racing as a team of three in a time-trial-style new event, the Aussies were the 12th to depart on minute intervals and overtook four teams on their way to silver.

After going through halfway in third place, the Australians picked up more than 40 seconds on the Germans and almost a minute on the US on the second lap to finish agonisingly close to a maiden gold.

With Hurst and Mainstone sharing the lead, and Gorman tucked in single file, Hurst was confident she could keep pace.

”I’ve swum in plenty of races on the east coast of Australia with Mel Gorman at my heels, so I knew she would always be there and if we worked together we would be a good chance for a medal,” Hurst said.
